Drian ‘Gintong Kamao’ Francisco scored another big victory in his quest for a world title. He battered Javier Gallo for five rounds until the referee stepped in at the 2:54 mark of the fifth round.
Francisco started the fight connecting with heavy punches. His awkward style threw off Gallo who did not know what to do.
Gallo got cut on his left brow early in the first round but he continued to move forward. In the second round, Francisco unleashed an array of body shots that bothered Gallo.
The third round was the best of the fight for Gallo. He was able to cut the distance and connect with blubbing punches but he could not connect with a punch clean enough to hurt Francisco.
The early parts of the fourth and fifth rounds started the same. Gallo moved forward because he knew that was the only way he could be effective while Francisco picked his punches from the outside.
In the last minute of the fight Francisco poured it in to hurt Gallo. The Mexican showed tremendous resolve by staying on his feet and trying to fight back but Francisco kept attacking, prompting the referee to call a halt to the bout.
“Nahirapan ako kasi maliit siya tapos fighter talaga,” said Francisco after the fight.
“Beteranong fighter siya, kaya niyang i-handle yung punches ko. Tough fighter talaga.”
Last year, Francisco was at the cusp of breaking through. He held the interim WBA super flyweight title and was one of the most exciting young fighters in the Philippines. But all that fell apart when he lost his title to Tepparith Kokietgym of Thailand.
With another big win, Francisco proved that he is ready for a shot at the world title. — LBG, GMA News
