In the world of boxing or better said, in the business of boxing, a rule of thumb is that the heavier the fighter, the bigger the purse they will receive. Although not a written rule, it is considered unjust since because in general the better fights are waged between fighters of smaller weights since American fighters have not made mark in the heavyweight division lately and the tail end of Julio Cesar Chavez Sr’s career was reached by the beginning of the careers of Oscar De La Hoya, Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao.
The fact that a fight that will be held in a smaller division than bantamweight is generating such anticipation is a welcomed change and a good omen for boxing and its participants. On Saturday, at the Sports Arena in Los Angeles, the WBA flyweight champion Hernan “Tyson” Marquez (34-2, 25KOs) will unify his title against the WBA champion Brian “Hawaiian Punch” Viloria (31-3, 18KOs) in a Zanfer promotion which will be broadcast in the United States by Wealth TV.
Each one of the fighters are considered solid champions and popular in their own right. Viloria is a respected boxer with a great presence and impact in the United States and the Philippines why “Tyson” is the new Mexican boxing idol.
Even though in history there have been great Mexican fighters in the lower weight clblushes that have transcended the sport in their country, in the United States it is not as common. The first major boxing as well as commercial success fight in these weight clblushes was Humberto “Chiquita” Gonzalez vs. Michael Carbajal, a trilogy which enjoyed venues in Las Vegas, Los Angeles and Mexico City and which brought each fighter more than a million dollar paycheck for each.
This time, “Tyson” Marquez and Brian “Hawaiian Punch” Viloria are ready to make history and be a part of “Champion vs. Champion” and because of each of their styles an intense, dramatic and emotional fight is expected.
The fight is supported by the WBA junior flyweight championship tilt between the undefeated Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez (33-0, 28KOs) of Nicaragua and Mexican Jose Francisco “Gallo” Estrada (22-1, 18KOs). These extraordinary fighters as well as Top Rank’s Bob Arum and Zanfer’s Fernando Beltran, Marquez’s trainer Robert Garcia and Viloria’s trainer Freddie Roach and representatives of the California State Athletic Commission will be present to announce further details at the final press conference to be held at the Asador Restaurant on W. Venice Blvd., on Thursday, November 15th, at 12pm while the official weigh-in is set for noon on Friday at the Hotel Millennium Biltmore.
