What stupidity is it for an active athlete to jump full time into politics!
Before Manny went into politics, some experts (like Emanuel Steward and Al Berstein) had already ranked him as one of the 5 greatest pound for pound of all time. He should have exploited that momentum by focusing ONLY on boxing. Doing so would have been the best possible thing that he could have done for his Country.
Once Manny won his Congressional seat, it was all downhill.
There is more than enough time for politics after retirement. Not to belittle Filipino congressmen and women but even a member of the House of Representative of the United States is a minor figure - a Filipino counterpart even less.
It is sad that Pacquiao's FULL TIME membership in such a lowly political position got him off the all time top 5 pound for pound list, an GLOBAL and INTERNATIONAL achievement not even the President can compete with (remember, when Arroyo was President she couldn't even get into the Larry King Show while Pacquiao was able to get into the show of Larry King's replacement Pierce Morgan).
Politics cost Manny Pacquiao dear. Politics cost the Philippine dear.
I challenge anyone to name a Filipino member of the House from when Henry Armstrong was world champion. How about when Sugar Ray Robinson was the world champion? How about when Muhammad Ali was the champion?
Pacquiao pursued a relative local and domestic goal and it cost him and his Country dear.
Manny would have been 1,000 times more effective in helping the poor if he did boxing 100% and politics 0%. I know he meant well but he definitely did wrong. By fighting one or two additional fights per year Manny would have generated an additional $60 million per year. That's a total of $180,000,000 over a 3 year period. That is a lot of roads, medicine, and food for the poor. Not to mention aid for victims of typhoons.
Manny! If you are reading this, retire from politics now and start serving your country in a way the makes 1,000 times more difference, fighting!
p.s. Manny was ready to dominate when he got tagged. He had already broken Marquez's nose. Just one tough luck moment in time. I agree with Roach that he still has it. I think he can still fight until 2015 if he does it full time. At $15 million per fight three times per year (instead of two) that's close to $150 million, much of which can be plowed into the Philippine economy and to help the poor, if that is what Manny really wants to do.
