“Hawaiian Punch” Brian Viloria will be defending his International Boxing Federation title in the coming “Island blushault” match in Hawaii next week.
For the Hawaii-born Filipino, this bout in his hometown is all business and not a homecoming.
“When I go back to Hawaii, it's not a vacation for me. Everyone thinks that Hawaii is a vacation spot and they want to go to the beaches and have fun, but for me it's all business and I'm going to be there to defend my world title,” said Viloria.
Viloria will defend his newly won IBF Light Flyweight Title against Jesus Iribe of Mexico.
Since winning the title against Ulysses Solis in a thrilling knockout fashion in Manila, Viloria said he will do everything in his power to keep his championship title.
“It's a fight that I can't look over. He's really dangerous and I need to prepare as much as I did for Solis... I need to take this fight seriously and defend this title really well,” said Viloria.
The match is set for August 29, 2009 at the Blaisdell Arena in Honolulu. Two other Filipino boxers, Dennis Laurente and AJ Banal, will be featured in undercard matches in separate non-title bouts.
Viloria’s trainer Robert Garcia has high hopes for Viloria. Garcia said he sees Viloria as a multi-divisional championship fighter.
"We talk about him unifying the title. He's ready to do that. We're talking about moving up in weight. He's ready to do that. I'm telling him three different weight divisions he can be champion," Garcia said.
Both the trainer and the boxer know that to accomplish their goals of becoming a multi-division fighter, they have to take it one fight at a time. -- report from Joseph Pimentel, ABS-CBN North America News Bureau correspondent, California
